in a nutshell, Crypto is trust executed by smart contracts: In a way that’s decentralized, immutable, and open. This is done by enabling portable identity and assets
The ‘rules’ are governed by DAOs, where members would collectively decide on how the organization should allocate its funds.
Methods for allocating a DAO's funds could range from bounties, salaries to even more exotic mechanisms such as an internal currency to reward work
This essentially replicates the legal trappings of a traditional company or nonprofit but using only cryptographic blockchain technology for enforcement.
What makes DAOs different from traditional company structures:
DeFi & NFT focus on the What , while DAOs focus on the How
Some figures from DeepDAO: 4.8k DAOs managing more than $10 billion in treasury asset management. The sum of $10billion is larger than some of the top 10 VCs in the world based on the total managed AUM.

With over 1.7m governance token holders and 665k active voters, it shows that there is a lot of activity within this vertical of Web3.

*Voting mechanisms - public and transparent records based on tokens held in wallets by contributors
Tokens - DAOs issue an asset, e.g. governance protocol token, in order to compensate members which gives them voting power
Multisig wallets - multiple private signatures so that the DAO treasury isn’t owned by one person*
